Outreach and Promotion
To recruit student tutors, a comprehensive outreach campaign targeting all undergraduate students (Years 1–4) within the Faculty of Engineering was launched.
A multi-channel approach was used to ensure high visibility, engagement and ease of access.
-
Marketing Materials
Posters featuring a QR code linked directly to the application form were displayed throughout academic departments.
-
Campus Promotion
The campaign was supported by digital adverts shown on TV screens across campus, including in the library and sports centre, to maximise reach.
-
Student Union Involvement
Flyers were promoted through the Students' Union to further increase awareness.
Application Process
To ensure quality and commitment, applicants were asked to complete the Tutor Application Form which included a personal statement addressing:
Motivation
The motivation to become a tutor.
Suitability
Details students’ suitability for the role, including relevant skills and experience.
Background information
Information regarding students’ background to encourage a diverse group of tutors who can connect with a range of scholars.
Applications were submitted via a QR Code or website, leading to a Microsoft Form, allowing for efficient data collection. Due to high interest, a selection process were implemented to allocate limited places and funding. To attract applicants and ensure meaningful engagement, university students were incentivised with the following:
Financial compensation
Tutors are paid for their time and efforts, aligning with existing private tutoring practice, making it a valuable paid opportunity for those involved.
Academic credit
Tutors can enrol in two credit-bearing modules associated with the programme, gaining formal recognition for their contribution. This not only enhanced employability but also encouraged a full-year commitment.
Timeline
Recruitment materials were distributed midway through the spring semester, providing university students with:
Time to prepare
Sufficient time to prepare thoughtful applications before exam season
Early notification
Early notification of selection, allowing them to register for the associated academic modules
Time to adjust
Time to adjust part-time work schedules and plan personal commitments accordingly
Early recruitment also enabled the timely completion of necessary background and disclosure checks, ensuring appropriate protection for any vulnerable groups involved in the programme.
